ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

Addaya Contemporary Art Centre is a completely private centre which opened in 2004, and since then has focused on the promotion and dissemination of the latest contemporary art. On the one hand, they operate an art gallery presenting of a minimum of six exhibitions a year, in addition to participating in international contemporary art fairs. Furthermore, their AIR programme, which receives an average of ten national and international artists a year, aims to support the creation and development of artistic proposals, while providing adequate space for experimentation.

Addaya offers personalised assistance, monitoring and advice, depending on each project, the artists' interests, needs, concerns, etc. Special emphasis is placed on bringing the artists in residence into dialogue with the local context - artists, gallery owners, curators and the general public - through open studios, talks, screenings, exhibitions or presentations of projects created during residence.

LOCATION:

Addaya Contemporary Art Centre is located in an old renovated house in the centre of Alaró, a village of just over 5,000 inhabitants with significant cultural activity. Alaró is at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana (declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in the category of Cultural Landscape) in a valley guarded by twin mountains, Castell d'Alaró and Puig de s'Alcadena. It is only 25km from the city of Palma, which is easily reached by train. Alaró has long been chosen by many artists as a place of residence and work. There is a cultural centre, Casal Son Tugores, with an interesting exhibition program, and the recently added space XF Alaro, managed by the Xavier Fiol Gallery of Palma de Mallorca.

STAYING THERE:

Duration of stays: In principle from one to three months, although shorter or extended stays are possible depending on the project or the circumstances of the artist.

Cost: Artists do not have to pay for their residence, but must cover their own living and travel expenses, as well as costs relating to the production of their work, including materials. The centre is responsible for the costs of electricity, water, internet, etc. Artists agree to donate work produced during the residency. The value and amount will be mutually agreed on in each case before the residency, and will depend on the length of stay and the type of work. These works will become part of the private collection of Addaya.

Grants: The programme does not offer grants directly, but it is part of ETAC (Espacio Transfronterizo de arte contemporáneo / Cross-border Contemporary Art Space) with Bòlit Centre for Contemporary Art in Girona, Centre d'Art Le Lait (Laboratoire Artistique International du Tarn) in Albí, Museu de l'Empordà in Figueres, and La Panacée in Montpellier. This international project had a total of five scholarships for artists to take part in residencies in 2014, and is planning a new open call for 2015.

Selection Procedure: By open call and invitation. Applications are accepted all year. Selection is based on the candidate's exhibition history, residencies in other centres, as well as the conceptual and/or technical quality of the works carried out so far. The expressed motivation for participation in the residency programme, as well as the adequacy of the type of work proposed, and how interesting the project presented is for the centre, will also factor into the selection process. Selection is made by the centre's directors. Moreover, Addaya works with art galleries and curators, especially valuing their proposals.

Languages: Catalan, Spanish, French and English.
