ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

ZAWPLAb is the space that the project ZAWP uses for the development of research and production residencies. The main objective is to welcome creators and allow them to engage in artistic experimentation and thinking. ZAWPLAb is a space made of several modules or containers for creative work, research, experimentation, knowledge sharing, documentation, etc.

LOCATION:

La Ribera de Deusto and Zorrotzaurre comprise a post-industrial area which has been subject to the last great urban development plan in Bilbao, which will turn this small peninsula into a real island.

FACILITIES:

The residency space is located in the same premises as the trans-media, electronic music and education laboratories. The space is also shared with permanent projects and collectives in residence.

Accommodation: ZAWPLAb is a refurbished warehouse that hosts 10 cubes. Half of the cubes are rooms for accommodating the artists in residence. The other cubes host the laboratories. There is heating, an office space, bathroom, wi-fi, and dining room.

Studios: Depending on the project, the artist can work in the ZAWPLAb, either in one of the cubes or in the central co-working space. They can also use the spaces of La Haceria and ZAWP Garabia Aretoa.

Access / Artists with families: The space is accessible for people with reduced mobility. The programme is not aimed at artists travelling with families.

STAYING THERE:

Duration of stays: Between one week and three months.

Grants: None.

Selection Procedure: By open call and invitation. The calls are usually launched in December, March, June and September . The selection committee is mainly composed of members of the ZAWP association. The selection criteria is related to the capability of the artist to offer an innovative approach to the concept of "transformation", and gives priority to projects that apply this concept to the field of "urban transformation". The artist has to present their work at the end of the residency. It is not required that the work is finished.

Languages: Spanish, Basque, and English.

ZAWP has exchange programmes with the following: CeReNeM, Huddesfiel University, UK; NovArs Research Centre for Electroacoustic Composition, Performance and Sound Art, Manchester University, UK; CMMAS, Mexico; Hellerau Europäisches Zentrum der Künste, Dresden, Germany; CYMRU chanted, Cardiff, Wales.
