ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

With past residents including such well-known Spanish artists as Salvador Dalí, Luís Buñuel and Federico García-Lorca, Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid has a long history as a centre for art. Between 1910 and 1939 it was one of the main centres for scientific and educational modernisation in Spain and now every year nearly 3,000 researchers, artists and professionals from all over the world are welcomed there.

The main aim of Residencia de Estudiantes is to offer a place for debate, critical thinking and creation, through the promotion of exchange among residents from different disciplines living together, and also between residents and intellectuals from the arts and sciences who regularly visit. Past guests include Mario Vargas Llosa, Jacques Derrida, Massimo Cacciari, Octavio Paz, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Roald Hoffman, and others. It is a forum for lectures, concerts, panel discussions, poetry readings, meetings and exhibitions.

FACILITIES:

Built in 1913 by architects Antonio Flórez Urdapilleta and Francisco Javier Luque, the buildings of Residencia de Estudiantes constitute one of the most iconic architectural nuclei of the interwar period in Madrid. Restored in 2001, accommodation at the Residence is now aimed at researchers, artists and creators from various fields, turning it into a meeting place and casual campus for the arts, sciences, and humanities. Surrounded by a unique historical garden and isolated from the noise of the city, it offers 90 fully-equipped rooms, a restaurant, cafeteria, library, hall, and living rooms.

Accommodation: An average of 3,000 visitors stay at the Residence each year, generally for less than a week. Those staying include creators, artists and scientists from various fields of knowledge, 60% of them from abroad (from seventy countries and every continent), including from the most prestigious universities in Europe and America as well as other cultural and scientific research institutions.
