ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

The Alhóndiga Bilbao residency programme offers a scholarship for comic artists in collaboration with La Maison des Auteurs in Angoulême, France. The AlhóndigaKomik scholarship provides free accommodation and an equipped workshop for up to one year, and aims to promote the emergence of new talents in the field of comics. To this end, it offers funding for the completion of a project selected for its artistic values and innovative character.

La Alhóndiga Bilbao is located in an old wine store, a Modernist building which was declared a Cultural Property by the Basque Government in 1999. The facades and part of the space were designed by the architect Ricardo Bastidain in the early twentieth century, and have been maintained in good condition and restored. The classical exterior contrasts with the urban and innovative interior designed by Philippe Starck, which personifies the life and energy of Bilbao. La Alhóndiga offers a wide range of cultural activities for the public, including exhibitions, concerts, theatre, lectures and discussions, workshops and courses for children, adults and families.

La Maison des Auteurs is part of the International Comic City (Cité Internationale de la Bande Dessinée et de l'image). It contributes, along with the International Comics Festival (Festival International de la bande dessinée), in making Angoulême the European capital of comic art. Since opening in 2002, The House of the Authors has hosted over 100 authors, both novices and professionals from France and other countries, allowing them to develop projects related to graphic narrative and taking advantage of the facilities and opportunities for exchanges.
