ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

Matadero Madrid is a living, changing space situated in one of the most important examples of twentieth century industrial architecture in Madrid. Matadero Madrid aims to become the largest centre for contemporary art in the city and a reference point in the international cultural scene. Matadero Madrid is an initiative by the City of Madrid in collaboration with other public and private entities. One of the main objectives of Matadero Madrid is to promote the local art scene and the production of new work and knowledge. This is done through the development of projects using collaborative practices, experimental processes while reflecting on the socio-political context.

In this context, the residency programme El Ranchito has established itself as a stable programme that provides work spaces and residencies for artists, architects, curators, thinkers and other cultural producers. During the residencies, cultural producers from different disciplines, nationalities and backgrounds share their individual work with the local artistic community in a communal open space in Matadero Madrid.

The residencies are divided into two periods: one for project development that goes from six weeks to three months, and another for the public presentation of the results.

Every year around three projects are produced within the context of El Ranchito residency programme. Thanks to a strategic alliance with AECID (Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development) these projects are also carried out and presented in other international residency centers. The objective of the alliance is to support the international visibility of the local artists and their work.
