ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

La Escocesa, an art production centre in the Poblenou district of Barcelona, is an artist-led initiative dedicated to providing affordable services and spaces to its select group of artists in residence, with the aim of providing the structure necessary to further their professional careers. A municipal space, it is managed by the non-profit l’Associació d'Idees with the aim of supporting the creation and dissemination of visual art. The programme is an established part of the Barcelona art scene and has strong ties to the community in which it exists. Currently there are approximately 23 artists in residence at La Escocesa.

FACILITIES:

Situated in an old factory, La Escocesa puts three floors at the disposal of its artists, including studios (22 in total), multi-purpose rooms and an exhibition space, as well as a variety of open spaces which are constantly evolving according to the needs of the residents.

The ground floor contains nine studios and a large multi-purpose space, a kitchen with outdoor patio, and a bathroom. One of the studio spaces is used for residencies in collaboration with other art production centres. In December 2012 La Escocesa opened a newly refurbished exhibition space (Espai M) which is used for the display of members' works, as well as for other activities.

The upper floor contains twelve studios as well as a kitchen and bathroom, and access to the roof (with another studio) which is used for relaxing in the open air as well as for informal meetings.

The middle floor is the residency's office, and includes space for meetings and a computer room for communal use.

Access / Artists with families: The ground floor spaces are accessible for those with reduced mobility, but due to the nature of the old structure of the factory in which La Escocesa is housed, upper floors are accessible only by stairs. The programme welcomes artists with families.
