ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

Inspired by the Arabic tradition which gives it its name, which means “neighbourhood”, Jiwar is located in the thriving artistic centre of Gràcia in Barcelona. The programme aims to establish a creative and sustainable relationship between artists and the surrounding community. The programme prioritises artistic and social projects involving intercultural and interdisciplinary issues, and believes in sharing artistic and life experiences and feeding them into the surrounding environment.

After a three-week stay, artists are invited to share their work with the public through outdoor meetings, ephemeral exhibitions, or workshops in the residency's garden or other spaces in the neighbourhood. It is in these meetings that dialogue between artists and the public is encouraged.

Jiwar is connected with different public and private organisations in the neighbourhood with whom the residency collaborates, according to the needs of the different projects developed by the artist in residence.

FACILITIES:

Accommodation: The residence is in a house dating from 1886, built during the Catalan modernist period and designated as an architectural heritage by Barcelona City Council. A spacious apartment (180m²), one side looks out onto the street, while the other faces an internal garden; there are four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a library, a kitchen/living room, a study and a gallery. The garden is spacious (700m²) and is divided in two, with a plant garden and an orchard, both very attractive areas to work alfresco.

Since 2013 the residency also has a penthouse in the same building for small groups or artists traveling with their families. It has four rooms and two large terraces of 30m² and 100m².

Studios:

One individual studio of 10m² suitable for painting and other activities that don't require a lot of equipment.
Three large bedroom/studios, each 20m².
A small bedroom, 12m².
A meeting room which can accommodate up to ten people, equipped with library, printer, wi-fi, etc.
There are also other various spaces where artists can work, including a gallery overlooking the garden.

If artists need facilities not provided at Jiwar, the residency can help them find suitable spaces for dance, printing, ceramics, etc in the neighbourhood.

Access / Artists with families: The residency states that due to the architecture of the building, it is not accessible for artists with reduced mobility, due to stairs. Artists with families are welcome to apply for staying in the residency's penthouse located in the same building (four people maximum).
