La Fragua ("The Forge") is a non-profit cultural organisation conceived with the purpose of developing dynamic visual arts in a rural environment. Its international artist residency is housed in the historical Convent of Santa Clara in Belalcázar, Spain. This multi-purpose space is dedicated to the production, study and exhibition of contemporary art away from typical urban spaces.

Their objective is to build an international environment open to reflection, a place where art questions our individual and collective identity in relation to territory, while bringing new life to public spaces.

Their new residency programme, "Silencio", is aimed specifically at writers and artists in general who are looking for a period of seclusion. Those who desire a profound disconnection and the concentration necessary to read, write, compose or research, can live in the centre of the convent in a room with a private terrace.

In addition, La Fragua have a separate satellite space in the city of Cordoba, called CoMbO, where artists, curators, critics and the wider community can, they say, keep alive the illusion of a place of resisitence against a homogenised culture. The space combines displays by local and international artists previously resident in La Fragua with presentations by other centres, as well as talks, meetings, a book club, and other activities centred on contemporary art.

Artists are invited to work within the enclosure of El Convento de Santa Clara de la Columna. This 15th century abbey is considered the most important abbey in Córdoba, both for its size (more than 7,000m²) and its architecture. Only 1km from the city, the abbey stands on fertile land, and is famous for its gardens, which feature plenty of water and wells.

La Fragua chose the abbey for its calm environment charged with artistic meaning. At the same time, the reuse of the previously deserted property was an expression of the programme's intention to give visibility and new life to pre-existing public infrastructures. The inner space (two floors of 250m² each) houses artists' studios, areas for interventions, an exhibition room and a workshop. The building also has an administrative office and a digital lab. The outdoor space can be used for landscape interventions and for projects which combine art and agriculture or other types of installations.

Accommodation: Artists stay in La Casa de Manolo, in Pilar square, near the 15th century gothic castle of Sotomayor. The house has five individual bedrooms and three arched terraces with spectacular views of the castle. La Casa de Manolo was the old residence of D. Manuel Moreno Vigara, an intellectual and teacher at the Sorbonne in Paris. The house hopes to regain its owner’s spirit and become a space for thought and dialogue among the artists living there.

Studios: The studios are in a 350m² common room. Artists are provided with workbenches, drawing boards, lamps, etc., to build their own space in harmony with the other artists.

A residency in CoMbO (in their satellite space in the city of Cordoba) includes a work space with table, wi-fi connection, telephone, and 24 hour access. The team provide daily support with production.

Work Facilities: The studio has a media lab with Apple computers, two screens, a printer, a projector and a scanner. Basic tools for woodwork and stonework are provided, as are tonnes of soil for agricultural works of art. There is also a floor for dancing (30m²).

Access / Artists with families: The residency states that it can accommodate artists with reduced mobility and those with families.
